Erik Bulatov
Lumière de Nuit,
2018
Oil on canvas.
120 x 180 cm
Private collection
Moving between abstraction and figuration, the artist’s iconography comprises three recurring motifs: landscapes (sky, nature, urban views), portraits and text. These elements can be distinct or combined within one painting.
In his landscapes, Bulatov pays homage to the tradition of Russian painting, while re-enacting it in a modern context. This freedom, this independence of choice is linked to the subject, but beyond formal questions, in the end all the concerns of his work come forth: Bulatov is obsessed by the fundamental elements of painting: light and space.
