In CAUSAL EMERGENCE, Alicja Kwade captures the passage of time, in this case a single month. The artist  employs clockhands arranged in a logarithmic spiral, originating from the center at midnight on the first day of the month. Each subsequent hour is denoted by a separate clock hand. This design draws inspiration from the natural order evident in phenomena like growth (such as snail shells), storms, galaxies, and the golden ratio, akin to familiar logarithmic spiral depictions. Referred to as “Spiral Mirabilis” by Descartes and Bernoulli, Kwade’s representation allows time to be comprehensible in all directions, presenting time as a nonlinear dimension.
