Following the Right Hand of Sigmund Freud is a work in Pierre Bismuth’s famous series “Following the Right Hand of…”. Since 1999, Bismuth follows the right hand of well-known actresses, thus revealing the abstract drawings they unconsciously produce. It is precisely this idea of unconsciousness that Bismuth now addresses in a direct way, by choosing Sigmund Freud as the subject of his film.

In a “home movie” from the archive of the Freud family, we see the father of psychoanalysis chatting with a friend in his garden, unconsciously moving his right hand without imagining that his gesture would ever be “read”.
