Wim Delvoye elaborates on his previous series of Twisted Sculptures (radically modifying copies of 19th C sculptures) with this interpretation of the Venus Italica (2023). While presenting a new perspective on the classical model, Delvoye reinterprets the famous sculpture of Canova and puts the viewer’s gaze in motion, against the apparent fixity of the sculptural object.

Traversed by a circuit of marbles the artist investigates the sculptural object as a classical symbol of reverence and permanence and questions its immobility in a contemporary time and setting. Admiration becomes subversion, respect is playfully challenged.
