A loop of brightly colored cable tray hosts a coil of ethernet cable, in which all the photos the artists shot throughout one day are circulating endlessly without being seen. The images are pulled from Mattes’ phone. Two microcomputers transfer the photographs back and forth, creating a sort of autonomous network. Images without viewers, yet always there. Like most images nowadays. The vast majority of images do not exist in the form of printed photographs, hung on a wall or featured in a book, they instead exist as ubiquitous files being constantly copied and transferred between devices, from a data center to another one, through miles of cables or through thin air.
In this sense this is a display of contemporary images in their most common form.
Each work is composed of a very limited number of pieces, they’re standard items produced industrially, that can be joined together creating infinite unique combinations and shapes, creating a visual and material tribute to data circulation, to communication, to the transfer of information and culture.
