NOTHING MORE- Inscription, 2023 is an “inscription” made by Augustin Maurs as part of his eponymous installation and musical work for voices and organ commissioned by the Bergen Assembly 2022 and curated by Jasmine d’O. In this large scale project, Augustin Maurs explores the voice as a resource of both sonic and political resilience while attempting to establish relationships between musical and geological time. The composition’s title is inspired by philosopher Mladen Dolar’s book A Voice and Nothing More (2006), which sees the voice as a core component of the social fabric and political realization. Following this notion, Nothing More can be seen as a musical exploration of surplus and lack, alongside political voicing in environments of vulnerability. Starting with language, Maurs plays with decomposing sequences and rhythms to unearth layers of meaning and textures in each word, like the earth’s sediment. Also using coal to write these words in the form of a mural, scores, and scripts, Maurs delimits material and vocal resonances of language.
