Miryana Todorova
Garden of Life: The Impossible States of Love,
2022
Oil on canvas
169 x 127cm
Painting has always played an important role in Todorova’s artistic development. Similarly to the way she develops her performances and installations, in her paintings she not only experiments with color, lines and shapes but also gives expression to her personal experiences that deeply reflect on the constantly changing world we live in.
Todorova draws ideas from tree branches and natural patterns of existence that optically distort visions and relics of everyday life occurrences, interconnecting in time. The explosion of fluid almost calligraphic marks and layered abstract forms in and out of the canvas set up the viewer to encounter a more idealistic landscape of new utopian possibilities.
‘Garden of Life: The Impossible States of Love’ focuses on adaptations; not quite fitting but being considered fit, perceiving the flow of time but not being able to surpass the obstacles around it. There is an ongoing attempt to reshape the body and search for possible roots, attachments and strong bonds to fight the structural powers of oppression. But the underlying feeling of being grounded yet ‘unrooted’ prevails- trying to locate yourself within your own family tree and to confront simultaneously the demons of the past and the heroes of the future forward.
