Kay Walkowiak’s 2023 series Eternal Now offers a profound reflection on time and existence through seven post-minimalist objects, each uniquely color-coded. These clock hand-like objects do not display any specific time; all hands point downwards, almost hanging, which creates a profound visual and conceptual impact.
The downward orientation of the hands deviates from traditional timekeeping, prompting viewers to reconsider their relationship with time. The hanging hands suggest a suspension of time, halting the usual progression of hours, minutes and seconds to create a continuous present. This perpetual “now” challenges the linear perception of time, resonating with existentialist themes. It reflects Martin Heidegger’s concept of ‘being-towards-death,’ where the awareness of our finite existence brings significance to our present actions. The suspended hands embody the tension between the fleeting nature of time and the desire for permanence. The color-coding adds an emotional and psychological layer to the series, suggesting diverse interpretations of the same temporal experience. Each color may represent different states of being, moods, or life stages, enriching the viewer’s engagement with the work.
In essence, Eternal Now invites viewers to reflect on the nature of existence and the meaning of the present moment. Through its minimalist yet profound approach, the series offers a compelling meditation on the temporal dimensions of human life.
